Teen Support Pack USB FAQ

We have designed the USB datastick within our Teen Support Packs to be as simple to use as possible. Whilst we cannot provide detailed technical support, you may find the answer to any questions below. If you still need support, please contact us.

What system requirements do I need to use the USB Datastick?

  1. A PC or laptop running Windows (version 8 or above).

  2. A USB port

How do I view the PDFs?

To view the PDF files on the datastick you need some software to view PDF files. Most computers will have this already. If the PDF files do not open when you click on them, try this:

  1. From the main menu, click on Help.

  2. Click on Techinical Help.

  3. Tick the box to use Sumatra PDF. This is free open-source software, which you can use without a licence.

When you click to open a PDF from the menu, it should now open in the Sumatra software.

How do I share the PDFs?

If you want to share copies of the My JIA booklet, or other key PDF documents, with friends, family or teachers you can find a copy on your datastick in the \PDF folder.

How do I watch the videos?

To view the videos on the datastick you need some software. Most computers will have this already, but sometimes it doesn't work properly with the menu software - either the video will not play, or the menu closes completely when you try to watch one of the videos. If the videos do not play when you click on them, try this:

  1. From the main menu, click on Help.

  2. Click on Techinical Help.

  3. Tick the box to use VLC Portable. This is free open-source software, which you can use without a licence.

When you click to view a video from the menu, it should now open in the VLC Portable software. This can take a few seconds to load.

How do I use the journal software?

You can open the journal software either from the menu, or by clicking on the 'MyJournal' link on the datastick directly. The journal is a simple to use tool where you can type or add images and videos to record anything you want. The journal is not password protected, and not backed-up automatically, so make a copy to somewhere safe and don't leave the datastick unattended if you use the journal tool.

I've deleted something - can you help?

If you have deleted one of the PDFs of a book, you can run the 'update.bat' file on the datastick to download them again. Unfortunately we cannot help if you've deleted anything else from the datastick.

I'm still stuck - can you help?

Unfortunately we are not able to provide detailed technical support. However, most of the resources on the datastick can be found on our website at www.jarproject.org/teen.

If you cannot access the USB datastick yourself, feel free to pass it to someone else if they can use it and you think it would be useful to them - a friend, family member, someone else with JIA, or a teacher as it will help them understand your condition better so they are better able to support you.

Can I use the datastick for something else?

Yes! The USB datastick you receive from us is yours. Use it however you wish to. There is space on there so you can store school or college work, photos, or anything else you wish to. Be careful, though - if you delete the files we have provided we aren't able to recover them for you.

Warranty

Whilst we have taken every effort to ensure the datastick is free from viruses, you should always use antivirus software when using any USB drive. We cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage to your computer or data through use or misuse of the USB datastick, and cannot provide any warranty for the use of the software provided.
